AI WORKFLOWS

Stop prompting. Start briefing.

The best thing you can give an AI builder is a clear problem, not a longer wish list.

A prompt is not a product brief

A request such as “build a beautiful dashboard” describes an output, but leaves out the reason for making it. A useful brief explains who will use the dashboard, what decision they need to make, and what information supports that decision. Without those details, a builder can optimize for visual plausibility while missing the real task.

Start with one person and one task

For a first project, narrow the audience enough to make decisions. A reading list for a parent choosing a bedtime story is different from a catalog for a school librarian. Write the main task in plain language, then describe what success looks like. Keep assumptions visible so you can test them later.

Name the boundaries

List the behaviors the first version must support and the things it will leave out. Describe the data you actually have. Say whether information is sample, device-local, or shared between users. A clear boundary protects a small project from accumulating features that are expensive to maintain and difficult to verify.

Ask for a plan before a page

Have your AI partner restate the brief and identify unanswered questions. Review the proposed flow before asking for implementation. If the plan includes features you never requested, remove them now. A short correction at this stage is easier than untangling a large implementation.

Your first exercise

Choose an idea and write five lines: audience, problem, main task, constraints, and acceptance criteria. Use the free project brief template to expand it. Then ask someone unfamiliar with the idea to explain the task back to you. The places where they hesitate are useful signals about what your brief needs next.

Put it into practice.
